Betfor Association's Visit to Trieste, Spring 2009
Wednesday 10 June was a busy day for Ryanair with 22 BETFOR members flying into TS from Birmingham and Stansted. They joined the family of 557 John Miller who had come from Venice by car. We reckon that John is probably our senior member, admitting to 87.
By Sunday several othes had arrived bringing the total up to 38, including our own Triestine Nives Young 490 widow of CSM Jim Young RE Nives was visiting her sister Bruna, a Trieste resident.
The group was out and about daily with visits reported to Grado, Opicina, Duino, Sistiana, Monfalcone and some forays into Slovenia. The Monkey Run, alias Viale 20 Settembre did good business with the trattoria NUMERO ONO a favourite with many.
On Monday morning there was a visit to the Town Hall (Municipio) where the Council Chamber was used for a welcome to the City by a senior official. He delighted the audience by shedding his own tie and replacing it with the gift from the Association. In addition to the tie he also received a BETFOR badge.
In return he presented Roy Boyles, on behalf of the Chairman Ray Griffiths, with a copy of the illustrated book TRIESTE MILLENIUM..
In the evening everyone there joined together for a meal at the restaurant TEN QUEENS close to the Hotel Italia, our base camp.
On the final day Tuesday a group photo was taken at the statue of the author JAMES JOYCE, who lived in Trieste for many years.
We were then taken to by luxury coach to Lazzaretto at
the invitation of Colonel Claudio Tommasi (the good friend of 598 David Tynan) This visit was undoubtedly the high-spot of the week and the invitation is extended to June 2010.
